The Vale and the Mill

Aucklorn Vale is a secluded country of wooded slopes, cold water, old roads, farms, graves, ruins, and hidden paths. At its heart stands Aucklorn Mill, the surviving settlement built around the old mill that once gave the valley its purpose.

Aucklorn was never a great city or a centre of wealth. It was a working valley of grain, timber, travellers, chapel bells, hearth smoke, and harvest seasons. Now it is quieter than it should be. Some homes stand empty, some roads are avoided after dusk, and old names are often followed by a pause.

Life Within the Walls

The people of the Mill are practical, wary, and stubbornly alive. Willow’s End Inn, Ana’s General Goods and Victuals, the chapel of Riya, and Gildyr’s Ironworks remain the settlement’s chief gathering places, where travellers can find supplies, rumours, work, and fragments of local history.

The ancient walls and gates are barred every night at sundown and opened again only with morning light. The routine is followed without exception. The walls offer a measure of safety, but those who know the Vale understand that no wall is perfect.

Graves, Water, and Old Roads

The graveyard is more than a place of burial. It is a record of the valley’s families, losses, and unfinished stories. Names carved into stone may prove as important as anything spoken aloud, and after sunset the place offers little comfort.

The lake and shoreline are among the Vale’s most haunting places. Strange songs and sightings are reported near the water, especially as the light fails, and local tales claim that the will-o’-wisps wandering the valley all originate there.

The Vale After Dark

By daylight, Aucklorn can seem almost peaceful. Birds move through the trees, worn fences follow the roads, and the familiar signs of rural life cling to the land. After dark, the roads grow less certain, sounds carry strangely, and remembrance does not always mean rest.

The woods beyond the settlement are beautiful but untamed. Wildlife, monsters, and worse may be found beyond the safer paths, while old violence has left marks that time has not fully erased.

For Travellers

People come to Aucklorn looking for paid work, shelter, answers, or simply because landslides and bad weather have driven them through the Vale. Work can be found in missing persons, strange sightings, disturbances near the graves, dangers on the roads, and old questions no one has been able to answer.

Patience is rewarded here. Names matter, family histories matter, and graves matter. In Aucklorn, the past is not decoration. It is evidence.
