The Emerald Reach
The Cascades of Elyr form the southern rim of Kael's Tear, where warm rains, ancient forests, steep valleys, and uncounted waterfalls have shaped the land since time beyond memory. Every cliff seems to hold another silver ribbon of falling water, and every hollow another stream gathering strength for the long descent into the Basin.
No scholar can say with certainty what the old word Elyr once meant. One translation has endured: The Breath of the World. Standing beneath the rain-laden canopy, listening to water and wind moving together, few find reason to argue with it.
Birthplace of Rivers
Most of the rivers that nourish the Starfell Veldt are born within Elyr. Hidden springs, rain-fed lakes, and mountain streams gather among the high ridges before joining larger rivers that spread across the Basin like veins through a living body.
To the Basin-born, these mountains are more than a distant horizon. Their waters feed fields, orchards, grazing lands, and settlements far below. Few families in the Veldt are untouched by what descends from Elyr.
Above the Mist
Travellers who reach the highest ridges sometimes witness a sea of white mist spilling into Kael's Tear below, until only the tallest hills and oldest trees rise above it like islands. As the morning light spreads and the waterfalls vanish into the veil, the world seems to breathe.
Many leave convinced they have seen one of Auldwyn's greatest wonders. Others simply stand in silence, understanding that some places ask for nothing more than to be witnessed.
Forests, Heights, and Hidden Ways
Elyr is a region of steep paths, drowned ravines, slick stone, dense canopy, clouded passes, and sudden drops. Trails shift with rain and season. Some routes are known only to hunters, rangers, druids, and those who have spent years learning the language of water over stone.
Its beauty invites exploration, but the mountains remain unforgiving. Flooded crossings, landslides, predators, and storms can transform a familiar path within hours.
Those Who Come to Elyr
Travellers come seeking hidden springs, rare plants, lost trails, old shrines, high forests, and views across the Basin. Scholars study the rivers and debate the meaning of Kael's Tear. Pilgrims climb in search of solitude, while guides, rangers, and hunters follow routes that seldom appear on maps.
The Cascades reward patience and humility. They do not reveal themselves to those who hurry.
