Beneath Kael's Sky
The Starfell Veldt is remembered not for kings, wars, or buried treasure, but because nowhere else in Auldwyn looks quite like it. Vast prairies roll toward distant horizons, Moon Willows gather beside quiet streams, wild horses race alongside migrating herds, and the night sky stretches so brilliantly overhead that many travellers claim they first understood the size of the world while standing beneath it.
For those born elsewhere, the Veldt is one of Auldwyn's great natural wonders. For those born beneath its skies, it is simply home.
The Living Basin
Towering Basin Grass covers much of the land, broken by winding rivers, clear creeks, hidden springs, scattered groves, orchards, and long fields of Skyreed whose pale plumes turn hillsides silver and gold. Dire Elk, Aurochs, Dire Wolves, Veldt Mountain Lions, Great Hares, wild horses, Moon Herons, and Giant River Turtles all form part of a balance older than living memory.
The Basin is beautiful, but not tame. It rewards those who respect its rhythms and humbles those who mistake openness for safety.
The Hunt and Kael's Crown
On rare occasions, white-grey fog rises until the Basin disappears beneath a silent sea of mist. Storykeepers call this the Hunt and say Fyrd once more pursues Tolk across hidden grasses. Whether literal truth or inherited memory, the event commands respect. Journeys pause, guides become invaluable, and even lifelong Basin-born walk more carefully until the fog lifts.
Rarer still is Kael's Crown, when the moon shines in a way scholars cannot explain and Moon Bloom Orchids awaken across the grasslands until dawn. Families gather, promises are renewed, and marriages are often celebrated beneath what the Basin-born call Kael's Blessing.
The Basin-Born
The first settlers came from many lands, drawn by fertile soil, water, grazing, peace, or opportunity. Over generations, their descendants became Basin-born. Humans, elves, half-elves, halflings, gnomes, orcs, and others all call the region home, united less by ancestry than by the ways they live beneath Kael's sky.
They raise horses, tend orchards, guide travellers, fish rivers, hunt grasslands, ferry merchants, work timber and iron, and offer hospitality because tomorrow's traveller may be themselves. The Basin asks less where someone came from than how they choose to live within it.
Walking Beyond the Rim
Not every Basin-born remains. Some inherit ranches, orchards, ferries, or family trades, while others hear the call of distant roads. The Veldt does not ask that they stay. Like rivers leaving the Basin or birds following distant seasons, some stories begin by walking beyond the rim.
Yet those who leave seldom forget the sound of wind moving through Basin Grass, and many spend the rest of their lives finding reasons to return.
