How to play Neverwinter Nights online

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition still runs live multiplayer servers in 2026, kept going by community-run persistent worlds. Here's how the multiplayer side of the game actually works.

What you need

Before you can play online

The game
You need Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition (NWN:EE), sold by Beamdog on Steam, GOG and other stores. The original 2002 release does not connect to modern multiplayer servers.
Platforms
NWN:EE multiplayer runs on PC, Mac and Linux, and players on different operating systems can play together on the same server.
Cost
Buying NWN:EE is a one-time cost. Most community servers, including Auldwyn, are free to join once you own the game.
An internet connection
Multiplayer connects to a remote server; there's no console-style online subscription needed.

The multiplayer menu

Finding and joining a server

  1. Open Multiplayer from the main menu

NWN:EE's main menu has a dedicated Multiplayer option, separate from the single-player campaigns.

  2. Browse the server list, or direct connect

The server browser lists public servers by name, player count and module. If you already know a server's address, Direct Connect skips the list and connects straight to it.

  3. Let the server send you its content

Most active servers use NWSync, which downloads the custom content a server needs the first time you connect. You generally don't need to install anything by hand.

  4. Create or load a character

On a persistent world, your character is usually stored on the server itself (a "server vault") rather than on your own PC, so it's there whenever you reconnect.

  5. Check the server's own rules before you log in

Every server sets its own level cap, PvP policy and allowed classes or races. Most post this on their website or Discord, not in the game itself.

Good to know

Common questions about NWN multiplayer

Is Neverwinter Nights still multiplayer in 2026?

Yes. NWN:EE's multiplayer and server browser are actively maintained, and a number of persistent worlds run dedicated servers around the clock.

What's the difference between a module and a persistent world?

A module is a single map or short adventure, often played once with a small group. A persistent world (PW) is an always-on server with its own continuing setting, where characters and the story carry over between sessions. See our persistent world explainer for more.

Do I need the original 2002 version first?

No. NWN:EE is a standalone re-release; you don't need to own the original Diamond edition to play it.
