Server guide

Everything that makes Auldwyn its own server: the level range, what death and PvP mean here, what's restricted at character creation, and how the custom content reaches your game.

The server

About Auldwyn

We are a small, community-focused server looking to curate an experience like you and your friends gathered around the table with your dungeon master.

We are staffed with unpaid volunteers; Auldwyn is not a business, it's a labour of love.

Game type
Persistent World server
Setting
Custom world with a custom pantheon. See World Lore.
Dungeon Masters
Loki, Alarah, Starkwolf, Chicken Little, Wyvern, Sabre, Agony, Falcon, Veilwarden.

Scope

Level range & pacing

Level cap
Characters advance from level 1 to a planned cap of level 40.
Pacing
Progression is deliberately slow and story-driven. Experience rewards are moderate, not grind-focused.
Magic & treasure
Moderate to high for both. Hack-and-slash content and tricks & traps are both heavy.
Schedule
24/7. Vault type is server vault; characters live on our server, not your local install.

Rules

Death & PvP

Death
No death limit. Dying costs a small amount of XP and gold. Player characters cannot be permanently killed by other players without that player's consent; the DM team reserves the right to apply serious consequences in rare, significant story circumstances.
PvP
In-character PvP only; friendly fire is off within a party, while NPCs and non-party characters can be affected by harmful spells. Losing a fight means an in-character defeat - wounded, robbed, captured, or forced to withdraw - never a reason to grief or repeatedly target another player.
Content guide
13+. No NSFW or sexually graphic content.

Building a character

Character options

Alignments & classes
All alignments and all base classes are open.
Races
All races are allowed and encouraged. See the races of Auldwyn for the six playable races and their cultures.
Prestige classes
All except Champion of Torm, Dwarven Defender, Red Dragon Disciple and Shadowdancer. A full suite of custom prestige classes, built around Auldwyn's own lore, is planned.
Unusual creature types
Vampires, werewolves, demons, liches, dragons and similar are not available as starting concepts. They're reserved for rare, staff-approved story outcomes.

What Auldwyn adds

Custom content, haks & delivery

On top of base NWN:EE, Auldwyn runs its own pantheon of thirty deities, ten regions and six races, all written as custom lore rather than a reused campaign setting. The server also runs a proprietary NPC Forge, letting staff build and publish full NPCs without the Neverwinter Nights Toolset - built on a UI foundation from IronWaffle's Character Builder.

Delivery
NWSync is enabled. All haks and custom content download automatically the first time you connect - there's nothing to install by hand.
Optional extras
A collection of optional texture and UI upgrades, including a full Graphical Overhaul and custom player portraits, is available through the Steam Workshop.
Scope
Levels 1-40 planned content, with new areas and lore published on an ongoing basis.

Credits & attributions

The sublime horror and gothic ambiance of Auldwyn is made possible by the musical brilliance of Travis Savoie, also known as RPG Music Maker, and selected pieces from Aubrey Hodges' "Shadows of Darkness."

Our NPC Forge system was made possible through the ingenuity of @IronWaffle, whose Character Builder laid the foundation for its user interface.
