About Auldwyn

What Auldwyn is, what it costs, and where your story begins.

What is Auldwyn?

Auldwyn is an original persistent world (PW) for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition. It is a roleplay focused multiplayer server with its own setting, pantheon and history, run by a small community of roleplayers.

Is Auldwyn free to play?

Yes. Auldwyn is free. You only need to own a copy of Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, which is sold separately by Beamdog on Steam, GOG and other stores.

Is Auldwyn an MMO?

No. Auldwyn is a persistent world (PW), not a conventional MMO. It runs on one community-run server with a capped population, named characters played by real people, and Dungeon Masters who can shape the story directly - closer to a continuous tabletop campaign than a theme-park MMO.

What is the current status of Auldwyn?

Auldwyn is a live server, which is in active development. New content is published often. Players are welcome to log in and play.

What is the level range on Auldwyn?

Characters advance from level 1 to level 40. Progression is deliberately slow and story-driven rather than grind-focused.

Where do new characters start?

New characters typically begin in Aucklorn Vale, a secluded valley of wooded slopes, cold water and old roads, centred on the settlement of Aucklorn Mill.

Quests & reputation

How quests, turn-ins, resets and reputation work.

How do quests work in Auldwyn?

Quest progress is saved to each character. Persistent quests can be completed once per character and stay marked in your journal forever. Repeatable quests are clearly marked and reset at every scheduled server restart; they give less XP but are often more profitable and may offer stronger reputation rewards. Quests are grouped by region, can form chains that must be done in sequence, and unlock new narrative tiers as you progress.

More in How quests work →

Is there a reputation system?

Yes. Regions, settlements and factions each track your reputation live. Completing quests or taking part in specific activities can raise or lower your standing with them, and reputation-based rewards are planned as the world expands.

More in How quests work →

Can I abandon a quest?

No. Once you accept a quest, it stays in your journal.

More in How quests work →

How do I turn in a quest?

When a quest moves to Ready in your journal, return to the character who gave it to you. Rewards are given automatically.

More in How quests work →

When do repeatable quests reset?

At every scheduled server restart, twice a day. Each restart is announced ten minutes beforehand in the #server-notices channel on Discord, and your character's progress is saved.

More in How quests work →

Can I share a quest with other players?

Yes, as long as the player receiving it meets the quest's requirements, such as a minimum level or progress in the storyline.

More in How quests work →

What happens when a community goal is met?

Everyone who contributed can return to the quest-giver to collect a reward. Some goals unlock more, such as a merchant who stays in a new area so players can trade there.

World & characters

The world, its tone, and how characters fit into it.

Do I have to roleplay?

We don't enforce roleplay and we've always made it clear that all play styles are welcome, but roleplay is encouraged. More than anything, Auldwyn is a welcoming and safe place for many different types of gamers.

Is Auldwyn set in the Forgotten Realms?

No. Auldwyn is an entirely original setting. It has its own creation myth, its own pantheon of thirty deities and powers led by Kael, Riya and Xeros, and its own regions and peoples.

Where in the campaign timeline are we now?

Auldwyn begins at the opening of a new story, in a time of unease and change, in and around Aucklorn Vale.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

Is Auldwyn connected to previous campaign settings?

No. Auldwyn is a new original setting, not a continuation of another campaign, module or timeline.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

Can I bring in a character from another setting?

You can take inspiration from an old concept, but direct imports from other settings may not be supported. If you're unsure, ask staff.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

What is the tone of Auldwyn?

A world of beauty, memory, mystery, consequence and hard-won hope, where something has begun to go wrong.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

Can players be vampires, werewolves, demons, devils, angels, liches, dragons, or similar creatures?

Not as starting concepts. They are reserved for rare, story-driven circumstances with staff approval.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

Can I play an evil character?

Yes, if played responsibly. Evil characters must never be used to grief other players or derail stories.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

How does religion work in Auldwyn?

Auldwyn has its own pantheon. Outside mythologies don't apply, and the campaign centres on the silence of Amara.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

Can characters be permanently killed?

Not by other players without your consent, though the DM team may apply serious consequences in rare cases.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

What happens when I lose a PvP encounter?

Treat it as an in-character defeat and leave the area for a while. PvP must never be used to grief.

More in Setting & Roleplay →

What should I keep in mind when making a character?

Your character needs a reason to exist in Auldwyn and room to grow. They don't need to know everything or be heroic.
