How quests work
Quests on Auldwyn are built around persistence, regional storytelling and long-term progression. They are not disposable tasks: every quest you finish becomes part of your character's lasting record in the world.
Getting started
Your first quest
New characters begin at the Mountain Pass in Aucklorn Vale. Your first quest comes from Alexei, a woodsman of the Mill Folk. Like every quest on Auldwyn, it is offered in conversation with a character you meet in the world.
The conversation window shows which faction a character belongs to and your current standing with it, so you can see at a glance how they regard you.
Tracking
The quest journal
Auldwyn has its own quest journal, built from the ground up. Alongside your quests it tracks quest chains, your progress in each region, reputation and quest items.
Quests
The Quests tab sorts your quests into three lists, filtered by region: Active, Ready for quests you can turn in, and Done. Each quest shows which chain it belongs to. To finish a Ready quest, return to the character who gave it to you; your rewards are given automatically.
Quest items
Crucial quest items don't take up inventory space. They live in your journal, where you can view, examine and track them as part of the quest's progression.
Progress
Persistent & repeatable quests
Quest progress is saved to each character, so every character builds their own record in the world. Quests come in two types: persistent quests, designed as one-time story experiences, and repeatable quests, built for repeat play.
- Persistent
- One-time quests. Once finished, they remain completed forever on the character you finished them with.
- Repeatable
- Clearly marked as repeatable. They reset at every scheduled server restart, which happens twice a day. Riya, Lady of the Dawn, announces each restart in the Discord #server-notices channel ten minutes beforehand. Your character's progress is saved.
Restart notices in the Discord #server-notices channel, twice a day. Repeatable quests refresh when the server comes back. - Rewards
- Repeatable quests generally give less XP than persistent quests, but are often more profitable and may offer stronger reputation rewards.
- Abandoning
- Quests can't be abandoned once accepted.
- Sharing
- You can share a quest with another player if they meet its requirements, such as a minimum level or progress in the storyline.
Together
Community quests
Some regional quests are shared goals. Every player who takes part adds to the same total, such as gathering crystals for the Vale's roadside lamps, and the whole community sees the goal fill up. They have their own Community tab in the journal, organised by region like other quests.
- Stages
- Each community quest is worked through in stages, each with its own goal.
- Your contribution
- The journal records how much you personally have added to each stage.
- Daily limits
- Some cap how much you can hand in per day, so everyone has a chance to contribute.
- When a goal is met
- Everyone who contributed can return to the quest-giver to collect a reward. Some goals open up more: a merchant escorted to a new area, for example, may choose to stay, letting players buy and sell there.
Standing
Reputation
Regions, settlements and factions each track your reputation live. Completing quests or taking part in specific activities can raise or lower your standing, shown as a named rank such as Stranger or Familiar Face.
As Auldwyn expands, reputation will become increasingly important, with inter-faction activities, regional consequences and reputation-based rewards planned.
Structure
Quest chains & regional stories
A quest can be a standalone one-shot or part of a larger quest chain.
- Quest chains
- Quests in a chain must be completed in sequence. Completing certain chains may unlock new opportunities or deeper narrative progression.
- Regions
- Quests are organised by region. All quests in Aucklorn Vale, for example, are grouped together in your journal.
- Narrative tiers
- Each region can contain narrative tiers. Complete enough quests in a tier, or its required narrative capstone quest, to upgrade your regional status. It could unlock a whole new set of quests!
